About this tour

The international city of peace and justice

Duration2.5 hours

Pricefrom €274
Total for 4 people is €349.00

The Hague calls itself the international city of peace and justice, and by bike you see why. The highest court of the United Nations, the International Criminal Court and the global chemical weapons watchdog are a short ride apart. On this private bike tour your guide connects them, from the peace conferences of 1899 and 1907 to the courts that sit today.

You start in the old centre, at the Binnenhof, where the Second Hague Peace Conference met in the Ridderzaal in 1907. You ride past the embassies on the Lange Voorhout and the King’s working palace to the Peace Palace, the home of the International Court of Justice that Andrew Carnegie paid for. From there the route runs through the Scheveningse Bosjes into the international zone: the courthouse where the Yugoslavia tribunal sat, the OPCW, Eurojust and Europol, and finally the International Criminal Court on the edge of the dunes.

By bike you see in two and a half hours what would take a full day on foot. The institutions are seen from outside, with time to stop, take photos and ask questions. On days they are open, you can also step briefly into the Peace Palace Visitors Centre and the public area of the International Criminal Court.

You ride like the locals do, on cycle paths for most of the way, on a city bike with three gears or, if you prefer, an e-bike. Your guide sets an easy pace and stops wherever there is a story to tell.

2

The Binnenhof and the Ridderzaal

Seen across the Hofvijver while the parliament buildings are renovated until 2031. In 1907 the Second Hague Peace Conference met in the Ridderzaal, and your guide explains why the governments of the world came to The Hague to talk about peace.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between this tour and the walking tour?

The walking tour (2 hours, €199 per group) stays in the old centre: the Binnenhof, Noordeinde Palace, the Lange Voorhout and De Passage. This bike tour starts there too, then rides on to the Peace Palace and the international zone, which are too far apart to walk in an afternoon.

Can we visit the Peace Palace and the ICC during the tour?

Yes, briefly, on days they are open. The free Peace Palace Visitors Centre, at the gate of the building where the International Court of Justice sits, is open Wednesday to Sunday from 12:00 to 17:00, and its exhibition takes about 30 minutes. The International Criminal Court lets visitors into its public area Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 16:30, except during judicial recesses and official holidays, with a physical photo ID. Both are open on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, so pick one of those days if you want to see both.

Can we go inside the Peace Palace or attend a hearing?

Yes, but these are booked or arranged with the institutions themselves. The Peace Palace runs inside tours on a limited number of days, with tickets sold on its own website. Public hearings of the International Court of Justice in the Peace Palace are open to anyone with a passport or ID card, first come, first served, so arrive early. ICC hearings are public as well, and groups can request an information visit on the ICC website. We plan the bike tour around it, starting or ending at the Peace Palace or the ICC so you go straight in.

Is this tour suitable for a law faculty or study trip?

Yes, it was made with them in mind. Tell us the level of your group when you book and the guide adjusts the depth. Groups larger than 12 ride with more than one guide.

Can I upgrade to an e-bike?

Yes, for €12.50 per rider. The upgrade at checkout applies to the whole group. If only some of you want an e-bike, leave it unticked and tell us in the booking comments how many you need, and we arrange the rest with you.

Do I have to wear a helmet?

No. Helmets are not required by law for cyclists in the Netherlands, and most Dutch people ride without one. If you would like a helmet, add it as a comment when you book and it will be ready for you.

How far do we cycle?

Around 13 kilometres (8 miles) in total, all of it flat and most of it on cycle paths, with plenty of stops along the way.

Do I need to be an experienced cyclist?

You should be comfortable riding a bike in city traffic. Most of the route follows cycle paths, and your guide rides at an easy pace.

Can children join the bike tour?

Yes, as long as they can cycle confidently in traffic on their own bike. Mention their ages and heights when you book, so the right bikes are ready.

Can the tour start or end somewhere else?

Yes. Tell us when you book, for example if you want to finish at the Peace Palace in time for an inside tour or at the ICC for a hearing, and we plan the route around it. We confirm the details, including where the bikes are returned, by email.

Do I need to book in advance?

Yes, please book at least a few days ahead so the bikes can be reserved. For a tour at short notice, call, text or WhatsApp us at +31 6 46 52 69 11.

In which languages is the tour available?

We offer our tours in English, Dutch, German, French, Spanish and Italian.

Does the tour go ahead in the rain?

Our tours run rain or shine. Only in case of extreme weather, such as a storm warning, will we contact you to reschedule.

Is a gratuity included in the tour price?

No, a gratuity is not included but always appreciated if you enjoyed your tour.

What is your cancellation policy?

You can cancel your private tour free of charge up to 24 hours before the scheduled start time, for a full refund.

How will I recognize my guide at the meeting point?

About a week before your tour, we send you a reminder email with your guide’s name and phone number, along with the meeting point and time. If you don’t spot each other right away, just call or message them.
