“Elena Romanelli gave an incredibly lively and fun tour. She was accommodating and helpful as well as deeply knowledgeable of the subjects she was covering. We came with a group of curious history buffs and she was prepared to answer any and all questions we brought her way. She presented herself as joyous, patient and professional for the full afternoon.”
An hour with the Dutch Golden Age
Fixed start times
- 10:30
- 12:00
- 13:30
- 15:00
- 16:30
On Mondays the museum opens at 12:00, so the first tour of the day starts at 13:30. These are the only times the Mauritshuis lets a guided group in, and the booking calendar offers no others.
Step into the Dutch Golden Age at the Mauritshuis, a 17th-century palace on the Hofvijver that holds one of the finest collections of Dutch and Flemish painting anywhere. It is small enough to see properly in an hour, which is exactly why a guide makes the difference: you are not racing a floor plan, you are standing in front of a handful of paintings and finding out what is actually going on in them.
You will see works like Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring, Fabritius’ Goldfinch, Rembrandt’s last self portrait and Paulus Potter’s life-size Bull. Your guide sets them in the world that produced them: a young republic, newly rich, painting itself.
This is a fully private tour, so the pace and the depth are yours. Ask about one painter for twenty minutes, or ask about all of them. It combines naturally with our private walking tour of The Hague, and the museum sits a two minute walk from where that tour runs.

Frequently asked questions
Should I book this or the walking tour of The Hague?
They are different tours, not two versions of the same one. This is 1 hour indoors, in front of the paintings. The walking tour is 2 hours outdoors, through the Binnenhof, the Hofvijver, Lange Voorhout and Noordeinde Palace. Both are €199 per group. If you only have time for one and you have come for Vermeer, book this one. If you want to understand the city, book the walk.
Can we do both in one visit?
Yes, and it is the most popular way to do it. The Mauritshuis sits on the Hofvijver, a two minute walk from where the city tour runs, so your guide can take you straight from the street into the museum. Book both and tell us in the comments that they are back to back.
Why are museum tickets not included by default?
Because the Mauritshuis sells its own timed-entry tickets and many guests already have one, or hold a Museumkaart, and would be paying twice. The €199 covers your private guide for the hour. If you do need tickets, just select the museum tickets option at checkout and we will arrange them for your whole group alongside the tour.
What time does this tour start?
The Mauritshuis admits guided groups at five fixed times: 10:30, 12:00, 13:30, 15:00 and 16:30. On Mondays the museum opens at 12:00, so the day starts at 13:30 and the first two slots do not run. These are the museum's own times, not ours, so we cannot start earlier or in between. Pick the one that suits you in the booking calendar.
Where does this tour start?
You will meet your guide at the reception inside the Mauritshuis museum.
Are museum tickets included in the price?
Not by default, but they can be: museum tickets are an option you can select at checkout when you book, and we will arrange them for your whole group.
Is this a private tour, or will I be with other travelers?
This is a fully private tour, it is just your group and your guide.
Can this tour be customized to my interests?
Yes, your guide can adapt the route to your interests, whether you want to focus on Vermeer, Rembrandt, the evolution of Dutch art and society, or just the museum highlights.
How much walking is involved?
This is an indoor museum tour at a relaxed, personalised pace, with minimal walking compared to a city walking tour.
What is the group size for this tour?
You book the guide for your group only. For a museum tour we advise a maximum of 15 participants per guide, smaller than our outdoor walking tours, because of the size of the museum.
What languages is this tour offered in?
We offer this tour in English, Dutch, German, French, Spanish and Italian.
Can I combine this tour with a walking tour of The Hague?
Yes. This tour combines easily with our private walking tour of The Hague, and most guests do exactly that.
How can I pay for my tour?
You can pay directly and securely online when you book.
What if I am dissatisfied with my tour?
We stand behind every tour we offer. If you are not satisfied, let us know and we will make it right.
Is a gratuity included in the tour price?
No, a gratuity is not included but always appreciated if you enjoyed your tour.
Can my tour start at a different time than the ones listed?
Yes. Add your preferred time in the booking comments or contact us directly and we will adjust the schedule for you.
Can I buy a tour as a gift for someone else?
Yes. Book the tour as normal and let us know it is a gift, or contact us and we will help arrange it.
What is your cancellation policy?
You can cancel your private tour free of charge up to 24 hours before the scheduled start time, for a full refund.
Is the tour wheelchair accessible?
This is an indoor museum tour, so there are no cobblestones to worry about. For the Mauritshuis building itself, check the museum’s own accessibility information, and let us know about any mobility needs when you book so your guide can plan around them.
Is the tour suitable for children?
Yes. Every tour is private, so your guide can adjust the pace, the stories and the length to suit children in your group. Just mention their ages when you book.
How will I recognize my guide?
About a week before your tour, we’ll send you a reminder email with your guide’s name and phone number, along with the meeting point and time. If you don’t spot each other right away, just call or message them.
Do you take large or school groups?
Yes. For larger groups we split you across multiple guides rather than combining you with strangers or putting everyone on one bus, so it stays personal and everyone can still hear and ask questions. Tell us your group size and we’ll arrange it.
How much are Mauritshuis tickets, and do I need a time slot?
An adult ticket costs €21, or €24 combined with the Prince William V Gallery, students pay €13.50 and visitors under 18 go free. The museum works with timed entry slots, so book ahead. If you add museum tickets at checkout, we book them for your whole group to match your tour time.
Is the Mauritshuis open on Mondays?
Yes, unlike most museums in The Hague. On Mondays it opens from 13:00 to 18:00, and from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. A Monday tour therefore starts in the afternoon.
Is Girl with a Pearl Earring on display right now?
Yes. She is back on view since 5 October 2026, after a loan to Osaka while the museum was closed. View of Delft is on loan to Madrid until 10 January 2027. The museum announces loans of its top works at least three months ahead. Checked October 2026.
How long does a visit to the Mauritshuis take?
Most visitors spend 1 to 1.5 hours. The museum is compact, a former city palace rather than a vast gallery. There is no time limit once you are inside, so after your tour you can stay as long as you like.
Can I take photos, and can I bring a bag?
Photos for personal use are allowed, preferably without flash. Tripods, selfie sticks and filming are not. Bags larger than A4 go in the lockers, and suitcases are not accepted, so leave luggage at your hotel or at a station locker.
